General Orientation on Swiss Culture, Policies and Values

The programme is designed for present or future managers of multinational teams and policy makers who are required to communicate in complex business situations and negotiations, especially with participants from different backgrounds, cultures and nationalities, and who would like to enhance the effectiveness of their communication skills and their understanding of the Swiss business environment.

The GoSwiss! programme offers an original combination of cultural and communication skills transmitted by seasoned specialists over a flexible timeframe. The basic building blocks are four three-day teaching units that can be attended either separately or jointly.

  • The first two units (module 1) develop fundamental communication skills and techniques, as well as key negotiation tactics and approaches, and the issues that may arise due to intercultural differences.
     
  • The last two units (module 2) expose the specificities of Swiss institutions and culture in two crucial domains i.e. banking and industry on the one hand, and energy and conservation on the other hand. Each module also includes business-oriented language courses in English (or in French as an option).

  • The course is designed for policy makers and managers of multinational teams holding an academic degree or equivalent who are required to perform in complex business situations, cooperate with participants from different backgrounds, cultures and nationalities, and who would like to enhance their intercultural sensitivity as well as their understanding of the global market.

    The programme fee covers all other necessary expenses, which are part of the studies. This includes lectures, workshops and study materials, meals, public transport, local visits, gala dinner and accommodation in a four-star hotel by the lake.
    Drinks and extra expenses are not covered. Participants cover visa costs, air and transport tickets related to their on time arrival to Neuchâtel.

    Programme Description

    As the business world becomes more multicultural, competitive and complex, professionals are looking for new ways to interact optimally with customers, business partners, suppliers, employees, and other constituencies in this environment.

    Managing diverse teams requires understanding such key determinants as language, culture, history, tradition, customs, and diverse business practices. Consequently, the importance of cross-cultural competences and international exposure increases.

    With its unique combination of ethnic diversity, political stability and economic openness, Switzerland provides the ideal context to develop such competences.

    Nestled at the heart of Europe and home to United Nations institutions, to headquarters of the worlds’ biggest corporations and to renowned banks, Switzerland is the melting pot of Europe. It is the perfect place to gain insight into the complexities of a culturally diverse environment.

    This Advanced Studies programme introduces the participants to its culture, policies and values. The programme explores strategic aspects of international business practice, provides an introduction to the Swiss regulatory framework, and invites its participants to explore the richness of its cultural and natural life.     

  • Programme Outline

    Programme Outline

    The combination of module 1 (or units 1a+1b) and module 2 (or units 2a+2b) generates a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) of 12 credits issued by the University of Neuchâtel.

    The programme comprises a combination of business-English and other business-relevant courses. The exposure to up-to-date developments in various fields is combined with practical discovery of the uniqueness and diversity of the Swiss culture. The programme follows a highly interactive and participatory approach designed to combine learning with fun.

    Culture

    • Business English classes: business oriented vocabulary, or French for beginners: basic grammar, vocabulary and speaking skills. These courses are combined with a presentation of the Swiss linguistic heritage.
    • Discovering the Swiss historical, natural and cultural legacy: visits to museums, natural landmarks and emblematic sites in the region.

    Policies

    • Introduction to Swiss labor relations, industrial structure, institutions and political organization.
    • Theory and practice. Rigorous exposition of the fundamental concepts combined with practical application of the acquired knowledge through experiential learning exercises, managerial simulations, and in class discussions.
    • Guest speakers share their professional experience, comment on case studies and provide their recommendations on interacting with Swiss business partners.

    ​ Vice-rector, Professor of international economics 

    Jean-Marie Grether (born 1960) is professor of international economics at the University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland). He is a trade economist with teaching and research experience in several Swiss and Latin American universities, the World Bank and the European Union. His main research area is the interrelationship between trade and the environment, with additional interests on migration and political economy issues.

     Vice-rector, Professor for the history of philosophy

    Daniel Schulthess (born 1954) is professor for the history of philosophy at the University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland). He has held visiting positions at various universities in Europe and abroad. His work is mainly concerned with modern European philosophy, including Leibniz and Thomas Reid. He tries to keep a balance between the openness that history requires, the sense of speculation that is manifest in the classical systems, and the aspirations to clarity and detail characteristic of analytical trends in the discipline. He has an open eye for the connections between philosophy and the social sciences broadly speaking, including law and economics.

    ​ Lecturer and Programme Director

     Dr. Kasia Jagodzinska brings a wealth of international managerial experience from the EU, US and the Middle East, which she combines with an academic career. Dr. Jagodzinska is recognized as the National Expert to the European Parliament in cross border mediation. She serves as a Senior Advisor to the United Nations in Geneva on matters concerning ethical business conduct and conflicts of interests. As an International Business Consultant at the European Center of Negotiation in Paris, Dr. Jagodzinska conducts executive education trainings for clients in France, Germany, Switzerland, and Poland. Her repertoire of experience also includes working as a Lecturer and Visiting Professor at several universities in Switzerland, France, Italy and Poland. She is responsible for MBA programs at Swiss and Polish universities.

     Assistant professor of applied macroeconomics

    Daniel Kaufmann is assistant professor of applied macroeconomics at the University of Neuchâtel and associated research professor at the KOF Swiss Economic Institute, ETH Zurich. He also taught occasional courses at the Study Center Gerzensee, the University of Bern and the University of Notre Dame. Before turning to academia, he worked as a Senior Economist at the Swiss National Bank.

  • Hold an academic degree or equivalent;
  • Have advanced English language skills confirmed by a diploma.​
